Department of Surgery

The department of surgery at Eastern Regional Referral Hospital, Monggar was established on 6th June 2008.
As mandated by the Constitution of Bhutan: “The State shall provide access to basic public health”, with mission to provide quality healthcare services the department provides various surgical services with competence, integrity and professionalism.
The department has inpatient, outpatient, and endoscopy units. Besides, inpatient and outpatient services, the department also provides routine and emergency upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and colonoscopy services. With the support from ministry of health endoscopy camps are being carried out in the region by the department. The endoscopy unit has two certified nurses. The minor surgical procedures are done on every day basis in the outpatient unit. The department provides various operations besides general surgery like basic neurosurgery, urological operations, vascular surgery, surgical oncology, trauma services, and pediatric surgery. The routine surgeries are scheduled every Tuesday and Thursday with rest days designated for outpatient care. The daily ward rounds are being carried out by on-call surgeon with nurses on duty. The bedside teachings for nurses are done during ward rounds. The monthly coordination meetings and surgical audits are done for efficient patient management and evidenced based care of patients.
Since inception the department has been progressing in providing state of art healthcare services and medical education. The department has been providing training to interns and post graduate students of Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan.
Currently the department has two consultant general surgeons and eleven nurses.
