ERRH, Mongar has started the mammography services starting from 05/12/2022 after a simple Thruesoel ceremony. The machine is supported by the Health Flagship Program at a cost of Nu.19.9 million. It is an X-ray of the breast to detect breast cancer. Breast caner is curable if detected early and treated. Thus, screening for breast cancer is recommended and mammogram remains the best screening method in reducing the mortality.
Breast cancer is one of the top cancers globally while it is the 3rd most common cancer in Bhutan with incidence of 6.8 per 100,000 population. Lack of early detection programs result in high mortality. Thus, this service will go a long way in early detection of breast cancers, successful treatment and prevention of associated complications and mortality among Bhutanese women.
The target group for mammography is females aged 40-65 years without risk factors and females <40 or >65 years with risk factors. For now, ERRH has started scanning the high risk patients with positive family history, palpable lump, and skin changes. There are already 114 patients identified for scanning excluding Mongar Dzongkhag.
